CHAPTER SEVEN

Flora woke bright and early once again the next morning, a consequence of the early hours Violet kept. She waved off her friend’s apologies when Violet came into the living room to find she had woken Flora once again.

“I don’t mind,” she promised. “Besides, I don’t have anything else to do today. I can’t go home yet, and it’s not like I can work remotely.”

“You know, I never thought I’d know someone who was as eager to get back to their job as you are,” her friend said, sounding amused. “What are you going to do to entertain yourself all day?”

“Well, I’m going to call Officer Hendricks and see if he has any updates. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they will have finished at my house early. After that…” She trailed off and shrugged. “I couldn’t say. Maybe I’ll go to the library and find some books to read. Or if you wanted, I could come help out at the coffee shop. I worked as a barista for a semester in college, I could probably manage to be at least a little useful.”

Her friend laughed. “Well, if you want to come in and help, I won’t stop you. Don’t feel like you have to, though.”

“I want to,” Flora said firmly. “You’re letting Amaretto and me stay here even though, according to Grady, there could be a crazed killer after me. It’s the least I can do.”

“Grady only worries so much because he cares,” Violet said. She tugged her boots on, bending over to lace them. “I’d better get going. Swing by whenever you want, and I’ll find something for you to do. Have a good day until then.”

“You too,” Flora said. “I’ll see you later.”

She knew she shouldn’t call Officer Hendricks until eight-thirty or nine at the earliest, so she spent some time on her normal morning routine, and then worked on training her cat. She hadn’t thought to bring Amaretto’s harness from her house, but she had brought the cat treats, so she spent some time getting the cat to jump between two of the tall kitchen barstools Violet owned, gradually increasing the distance between them as the cat got more confident.

Finally, she deemed it late enough to bother Officer Hendricks, and sat down on the couch with her cell phone in her hand. She had his number saved, and only had to tap on the screen twice to send the call through. He answered after just a couple of rings.

“Good morning, Ms. Abner. I’m hoping this is you calling for an update rather than to report yet another issue.”

“It’s your lucky day,” she said. “Have you made any progress? Can I go home yet? Did you arrest Duncan?”

“It’s an ongoing case,” he said, sounding tired. “No arrests have been made yet, but I’ve got to tell you, I don’t think Duncan Fowler is our guy. He has an alibi that seems pretty solid. I need to send some men to comb through your house again today. I
